Ópusztaszer Memorial Park of National History

The
village museum, the Árpád memorial and the Feszty-cyclorama
are the main points of interest in the park. It can be approached
by bus, by car or even by bicycle from the county town easily.
At the densely wooded part of the park you can find clearings
with outdoor sport facilities, play-fields and fire-places,
so everyone can spend some enjoyable and peaceful time here.
If someone did not bring sport equipment along he or she can
rent rackets, balls, sledge in the wintertime and even equipment
for outdoor cooking or barbecue. You can find horse-riding shows
and folklore programs regularly, but these can be specially
ordered for special times as well. Tasting the best Hungarian
wines and cheese-cake baked in an open-air oven makes the time
spent in Ópusztaszer even more enjoyable.

The
Ópusztaszer Memorial Park of National History was opened with
the goal in mind that it could become the center of tourism
coming to the Southern-Alföld. It took on the challenge of preserving
the national traditions of Hungarians and passing our cultural
heritage to the coming generations.
The activity in the Memorial Park has been extended by spare
time and recreational programs by now, aiming different age
groups at the same time. One of the main concepts in the creation
of park was to provide different educational programs for students
of elementary schools and high schools, since half of the visitors
of the park come from these age groups.
The Memorial Park wants to make the time spent here a really
useful and enjoyable experience for students, so besides the
permanent and temporary exhibitions we also provide visitors
the following programs...
Learning traditional folk games
Playing games has been an important spare time activity of people
from the very beginning of civilization, but it was a significant
force of creating and keeping together communities, too, so
games are part of the tradition of every nation. Our youngest
visitors, while playing cheerfully together with other children,
can learn old Hungarian games like playing tag/tig, circle games,
ball games, sayings and riddles.
Playing sports
The Memorial Park provides an ideal opportunity for visiting
students to test their strength, dexterity and courage at our
outdoor sport facilities.
Introduction into the world of traditional crafts
Shows introduce visitors to the secrets of traditional crafts
like cloth-dying, basket-making, forging, embroidering, making
homespun, wood-carving, baking honey-cake, making shoes, making
pottery and baking. Children are introduced to the history and
tools of the different crafts, they can follow the work phases
of the traditional ways of creating goods, processes that they
never meet in today's industrialized world. For a short while
they can have a glimpse at the life of our forefathers
Workshop
of traditional handcrafts
Visitors can try clay-modeling, felt-making, wood-carving, matting,
csuhé-weaving and candle-dipping. With the help of an artist
children create their own works, learn the way of molding material.
The finished pieces can be taken home and might be put on exhibit.
"Szeri classes" - learning more on special
topics in a special atmosphere
These classes give students a thorough insight into the special
field chosen. The classes are neither real school classes, nor
supplements to the traditional ways of education, but rather
activities held in a relaxed atmosphere, where children can
find answers to their questions and learn the ways to recognize
the causes of events and the following consequences on their
own.
