The first important event of the year Memorial Park
of National History. According to folk traditions the yield
of crops is estimated in the different regions of the country
in different ways on this day. Here the method used is the "vicevesszo-vágás".
In this procedure a shoot is cut off from a grape plant. If
fluids from inside immediately come out at the wound, plenty
of wine can be expected in the year.
Gregory-day 12th of March
From the 1860s it was universal in Hungary that school year
started around Gregory day everywhere. The Gregory-day tradition
is simply the recruitment of the students for the new school
year. Students go from house to house to bring every student
together. They call each other out of their homes with traditional
songs, while they are served all kinds of delicious, traditional
meals.
Easter
On the biggest celebration of Christianity we celebrate the
reviving of Christ. People stop fasting which they started on
Ash Wednesday. Blessing of food is a tradition that goes back
to the 10th century. Catholics bring Easter ham, lamb, milk
loaf, eggs and even wine to the church to have them blessed.
Blessing of wheat: 25th of April
In the Memorial Park Mark's day is usually held on the same
day - Easter Monday - as the food blessing. According to tradition
after the mass the priest blessed the standing wheat. Everyone
took one plant, brought it home and carefully placed it in the
book of prayers and took care of it in the rest of the year.
Pentecost (on different dates)
The Christian church celebrates Pentecost as a memorial of the
event that after the Ascension of Jesus he sent the Holy Spirit
to the Earth. A Pentecost King is elected in the Memorial Park
at this time Young men compete with each other in horse-riding,
dexterity and fighting to decide who is the most suitable man
to be the Pentecost King.
Hunniális
The greatest event of the Memorial Park is held on the last
Saturday of July every year. The main focus of the program is
a memorial of the ancient Hungarians, but it is a whole-day
colorful Festival, so everyone finds something interesting to
do.
Saint Stephen's day (20th of August)
Cultural, folklore and tourist programs make this events
a full day activity with bringing the old marketplaces of traditional
church-ale festivals alive. This is the only event of the Memorial
Park where political parties participate. Its a long standing
tradition that one of the leaders of Hungary holds a ceremonial
speech at the basement of the Árpád memorial.
Permanent exhibition- Feszty Cyclorama
The 120 meters long,, 15 meters high panorama painting
forms a circle with 38 meters in diameter. With the help of
the painting techniques, the artist's imagination and the visitor's
imaginative power one can vividly recall some of the possible
events of the Hungarian Conquest while sanding in the middle
of the cyclorama. Árpád Feszty received help from two of his
fellow painters to create this magnificent piece of art, which
took them two years from 1892 to 1894. László Mednyánszky painted
the background, while the horse-riding battle-scene is the work
of Pál Vágó. |
