The region is composed of 1 town, Kistelek,
and 5 villages, Baks, Balástya,
Csengele, Ópusztaszer and
Pusztaszer, surrounding it. Kistelek is the
only town and since it is also located right in the middle of
the region it is the administrative center.
Baks
Large scale vegetable production plays the central role in the
agricultural activities of Baks. The village is located next
to the main road connecting Szeged to Csongrád and its road
connections are also extended to the ferry crossing river Tisza.
This makes Baks an important point in the route connecting the
region to Tiszántúl. A large portion of the area of the village
is inside the Pusztaszer landscape-protection area, which, besides
its important values of natural treasures, could be important
in the development of tourism in the village.
Balástya
Balástya is located 23 km from Szeged. The E75 main road and
the Szeged-Budapest railway line crosses the village, so it
can be approached easily both on road and on railroad. The settlement
has the average level of infrastructure installed. Its economy
is based on agriculture including intensive cultivation of vegetables
and fruits, and production of ornamental plants and vegetable
buds under polythene greenhouses. The central office of the
National Association of Flower Producers is located at Balástya.
The village is developing dynamically, several apartments for
rent and a camping site has been built recently. The ranches
surrounding the village are ideal for the development of rural
tourism. The lake at Oszeszék provides perfect spots for fishing
and it also an important crossing point in the migration of
birds, so it is a natural treasure of the village, too.
Csengele
Csengele is located near the E75 main road. The settlement has
the average level of infrastructure installed. Economy is based
on agriculture, primarily on production of vegetables, but intensive
animal husbandry has traditions here, too. Most of the products
of agriculture are directly exported. There is a meat-packing
plant and a poultry-farm in the village.
Kistelek
Kistelek gained town status in 1989. The dynamic development
of the town is due to its favorable location: it is just next
to the E75 international main road and it is connected to the
surrounding settlements be roads extending from the town to
the east and to the west. The Szeged-Budapest railway line provides
the railroad connections. The small town is located 29 km from
Szeged and 58 km from Kecskemét. Infrastructure is well developed
compared to the other settlements of the region. There are several
significant industrial plants in the town including a cable
factory, a cheese plant and a dairy. There are other private
enterprises connected to these including a locksmith's workshop
and a factory making spare parts for machinery. The dominant
form of agriculture is intensive production of fruits and grapes.
The town has a high school and a secondary technical school.
Tourism is based on the transit traffic of the town and on the
natural treasures in the surrounding region. There is a hotel
and a camping site in the town.
Ópusztaszer
Ópusztaszer is located next to the Szeged-Csongrád main road,
but it can be reached from the E75 main road easily, too. It
is connected to Balástya by a bicycle road. Economy is based
on agriculture. The Ópusztaszer Memorial Park of National History
is next to the village. The world famous Feszty-cyclorama, which
depicts the event of the Hungarian Conquest of the Carpathian
basin is on exhibit here. The park is an important tourist attraction,
a lot of visitors arrive even from abroad. There is a camping
site and a hotel near the memorial park.
Pusztaszer
Pusztaszer is a typical ranch settlement. Infrastructure is
developed at the average level. Economy is based on agriculture:
the sandy soil is ideal for production of grapes and fruits,
the large scale production of cereals and vegetables There is
a paprika and vegetable processing plant in the village. Tourism
is based on the rural ranch atmosphere of the area, its natural
treasures (Pusztaszer landscape-protection are), its forests
suitable for hunting and its cultural treasures (memorial of
the Hungarian Conquest, art-school and workshop).
