Values of the natural environment
A special national treasure of the region is the two typical lakes of the Alföld, lake Bíbic and Müllerszék. Rare birds (avocet, black-winged stilt), nest around both lakes, they would deserve protection. The botanical garden near Pusztaszer contains several special plant species.

One fourth of the administrative area of the village of Pusztaszer is inside one of the following three natural reserves:
  • Pusztaszer Landscape-Protection Area,
  • Pusztaszer Fülöpszék Nature Reserve,
  • Pusztaszer Seven Chieftains Nature Reserve.
At Pusztaszer there is a unique mixture of the sandy soil of the Kiskunság, the szik soil of the Alföld and the bound soil of the Tisza region. This heterogeneity also appears in the flora and fauna found here. There are special orchids in sandy grasses, camomile and statice lives in the szik soils, and you can even find Sternbergia species.

The fauna is mostly represented by birds. 233 of the 370 birds that have been spotted in Hungary have already been recorded at Büdös-szék, more then 90 species nest here, too. Since the lake is an important location in the migration of the birds, the so called "Ramsasi-area" can even be found in the international records. Games characteristic to the Alföld can be found here: small games and water animals like pheasants, rabbits, wild ducks and wild geese. Deer, red deer and wild boars are also spotted occasionally. The fox stock is increasing rapidly, and otters can be found, too.

Features of the man-made environment
As a memorial of the important role the region played in the history of Hungary the Ópusztaszer Memorial Park of National History was founded here. The park include a memorial of Chieftain Árpád, the Feszti-cyclorama and a village museum presenting the way of life of the ancient Hungarians.

From the places of interest at Kistelek the late baroque style (1825-1831) church has to be mentioned. It is considered as a historical building, the first church was consecrated here in 1782. When designing the coat of arms of the city the natural and economic features of the region were taken into consideration. The history of the society and economy of Kistelek is clearly connected to agriculture, more closely to cultivation of plants. This is why in the upper, golden part of the coat of arms there is a heraldic plant with heart-shaped leaves coming from the back of a shield. The green color represents the cultivation of plants, the golden background stands for sunshine and sand.

The ruin of a church from the Árpád era can be found at Csengele. The tomb of a Cumanian leader and his horse from the 15th century was discovered near the village.

In order to celebrate the millenium of the Hungarian Conquest Pusztaszer decided to build the seven chieftains obelisk from money donated by the National Student's Association. The laying of the foundation stone took place in 1896. The obelisk stands on the highest of the seven hills, which is 14 meters high. On the top of it stands the 1.4 meters high turul bird, the totem animal of Hungarian people. The sides of the obelisk are decorated by the bronze reliefs picturing the faces of the seven chieftains. The design came from Imre Pataki art teacher. The obelisk was manufactured in the workshop of Gerendai and son, the reliefs came from the Budapest workshop of the artist. The memorial was unveiled on the 24th of June 1900. in the form of a great celebration. It stands as a memorial of the seven chieftains on the 10 meters high and 36 meters wide Árpádhalom since then.
